Course settings: the ones that matter

This is for admins who have built a course and now need to decide how it behaves before anyone is enrolled. By the end you will know what each setting on the Settings tab does and when to reach for it.

These settings are worth a careful look, because they decide what "finished" means and what your reports will later be counting. Set them before you enrol people, not after.

Before you start

  • Finish article 4, Lessons and courses: how content works, so you have a course to configure.
  • Open that course. A course opens into tabs: Course Content, Enrolments, Assessments, Settings, Overview. Everything below lives on the Settings tab.

The steps

  1. Open Content & Courses in the admin sidebar, then Your Courses, and open your course.
  2. Open the Settings tab. The settings are grouped into Data privacy, Course organisation, Course completion, Rewards, and Video playback.
  3. Work through each group below, then save.

Data privacy

  • Allow managers / experts to see all enrolments. This controls whether managers and experts can see every enrolment on the course rather than only the ones for their own people. Turn it on when a course is run centrally and you want wider visibility across the organisation, and leave it off when a manager should only see their own team.

Course organisation

  • Compliance course. Flags this course as a compliance course. Use it for mandatory training you need people to complete, so it is marked as compliance rather than optional.
  • Add to category. Files the course under a category so it sits with related content and is easier to find. Categories also appear as a breakdown in your course completion reports, so choosing one here pays off later when you read the data.

Course completion

  • Enable pass score. Turns on a pass mark, so a learner has to reach a score before the course counts as passed. Use it when the course has a quiz or assessment that must be passed, not only watched.
  • Allow re-attempts for quizzes and assessments. Lets learners retry quizzes and assessments. Turn it on when you want people to keep trying until they pass, and leave it off when a single attempt is the point.
  • Allow course access after due date. Lets learners still open and finish the course once the due date has passed. Turn it on to keep access open so late learners can still complete, and leave it off when the deadline is firm.

Rewards (Accelerate package)

Rewards are part of the Accelerate package. If you'd like electronic signatures or certificates switched on for your account, contact Customer Success.

  • Electronic signature. Captures a learner's electronic signature when they complete the course, giving you a signed record of completion. Use it for training that needs an attestation or sign-off.
  • Certificate. Issues a certificate to learners on completion. Turn it on when people should have proof they can keep or share.

Video playback

  • Course must be completed in order. Makes learners work through the lessons in sequence rather than jumping ahead. Use it for structured courses where the order matters.
  • Allow fast-forwarding. Lets learners skip forward through videos. Leave it off for compliance training where people need to watch the full lesson.
  • Enable video playback in background. Lets a video keep playing in the background. Turn it on when you are happy for learners to listen while they do other things.

What you should see now

  • Your course has a completion rule you understand: whether there is a pass score, whether re-attempts are allowed, and whether access stays open after the due date.
  • It is organised: marked as compliance if it needs to be, and filed under a category.
  • Any rewards you want, a certificate or an electronic signature, are switched on.
  • Playback behaves the way you want: in order or free, fast-forwarding on or off.

Common questions

Which settings matter most for compliance training?Compliance course under Course organisation, Enable pass score under Course completion, and turning Allow fast-forwarding off under Video playback are the usual set. Add Electronic signature or Certificate if you need a record.

Can I change these after people are enrolled?The settings live on the Settings tab and can be revisited. Even so, it is cleaner to set them before you enrol, because completion rules are what your reports count from the start.

Why does my category choice matter?Because category is one of the breakdowns in your course completion reports. Filing courses under sensible categories now means you can read completion by category later.
