Understanding Courses and Assessments πŸ“š

What are courses?

Courses on 5Mins.ai are structured learning experiences that combine multiple lessons, assessments, and resources into a comprehensive learning path. Unlike individual lessons, courses provide a complete learning journey with clear objectives and outcomes.

Steps shown in this video

  1. Courses are structured learning paths of lessons, assessments and resources. Your Workspace shows every course you're enrolled in
  2. Select View all to open your Course Enrolments page
  3. Filter your courses by status. Needs attention means a course is overdue, or you finished it without meeting the pass score
  4. Ready to Start shows courses you haven't begun yet, with the due date still ahead
  5. In Progress is for courses you've started. Completed means you've finished and met any pass score
  6. Scheduled courses have a start date in the future, so they haven't opened yet
  7. And All lists every course you're enrolled in, whether it was assigned to you or you chose it yourself
  8. Open a course to see what's inside
  9. Course Content lists every lesson and assessment, and tracks which ones you've completed
  10. Score shows the pass score, your quiz results, and whether you've passed
  11. Overview has the course description and what you'll learn
  12. Resources holds extra materials like PDFs and templates to download, when the course includes them
  13. Back on Course Content, work through the lessons in order
  14. Select the first lesson to begin. Your progress and score update as you go, and you get a certificate at the end if the course offers one

Course structure and components

When you access a course, you'll find several key components:

Main course tabs

You can navigate between different sections using tabs:

  • Course Content: Track your completion status for each lesson and assessment
  • Score: View your quiz scores and overall performance (only appears if the course has assessments)
  • Overview: Read about the course, what you'll learn, and who the instructors are
  • Resources: Access supplementary materials and downloads (if available)

Course content types

Within a course, you'll encounter:

  • Lessons: Core instructional content, lessons could be video, pdf, flashcard, or external links
  • Assessments: Various types of quizzes and tests
  • Situational tests: Real-world scenarios to test your understanding
  • Resources: Additional materials like PDFs, templates, or reference guides that are downloadable
  • Certificates: Available upon successful completion (if enabled)

Course enrolments

Types of enrolments

You can be enrolled in courses in two ways:

  • Assigned Courses: Your manager or organisation assigns these to you
  • Self-Enrolled Courses: Courses you choose to take on your own

Managing your enrolments

You can track your course enrolments in several places:

  • Your Workspace: The Courses you're enrolled in section shows your enrolments and how many need attention
  • Course Enrolments Page: Dedicated view with filters for:
    • Needs attention (shown first) - either the due date has passed and the course is not complete, or you finished the content but did not meet the pass score
    • Ready to Start - not yet begun, and the due date has not passed
    • In Progress - partially completed, and the due date has not passed
    • Completed - finished, and you met the pass score if the course has one
    • Scheduled - the start date is still in the future, so the course has not opened yet
    • All - every course you are enrolled in

Important dates

Each enrolment includes:

  • Start Date: When you can begin the course
  • Due Date: When you should complete the course

Understanding assessments and quizzes

Assessment types

  1. Multiple choice: Select the correct answer from options
  2. Match the pairs: Match each item with its partner
  3. Categorise: Sort items into the right groups
  4. Situational tests: Apply knowledge to real scenarios
  5. Short text: Provide a written answer
  6. Exercise: Submit a document or completed assignment
  7. Poll: Share your opinion (no right or wrong answers)

Quiz scoring system

  • Lesson Quiz: Your score in the quizzes that you attempt after each lesson
  • Assessments: Your score includes the percentage of graded assessment and situational test questions you answer correctly
  • Non-graded content: Polls, short text questions, and exercises are not scored. Completing them counts towards your progress, but they are left out of your score
  • Overall Quiz Score: Calculated as the percentage of correct responses across all graded assessments and lesson quizzes in the course
  • Progress Tracking: See your scores in real-time on the Score tab

Pass scores and course completion

Understanding pass scores

Some courses have a minimum pass score requirement:

  • Pass Score Display: Shows as a percentage (e.g., 70%)
  • Your Score: Displayed alongside the pass score for comparison
  • Result Status: Shows as Pass/Fail based on meeting the requirement

How pass scores work

  • The pass score is the minimum quiz score needed to complete the course
  • Your quiz score is the average of all lesson quizzes and assessments
  • You must meet the pass score to unlock your certificate (if available)
  • Pass scores are set by your organisation and cannot be changed by learners

Course settings and features

Courses can have various settings that affect your learning experience:

Video playback options

  • Sequential Learning: Some courses require completing lessons in order
  • Fast Forwarding: May be enabled or disabled depending on course settings
  • Background Playback: Allows videos to continue when switching tabs (if enabled)

Access controls

  • Due Date Access: Some courses allow continued access after the due date
  • Locked Content: Lessons may unlock only after completing previous ones
  • Certificate Requirements: Must complete all content and meet pass score (if set)

Earning course certificates

Certificate requirements

To earn a course certificate, you must:

  1. Complete all required lessons
  2. Complete all assessments
  3. Meet the pass score requirement (if set)
  4. Finish before the due date (in some cases)

Getting your certificate

Once you've met all requirements:

  1. The certificate icon will unlock in the course
  2. Click "Get Certificate" to generate it
  3. Your certificate will download automatically
  4. You can find it anytime under My Progress > Certificates

Course rewards

Some courses offer jewel rewards upon completion:

  • Jewel Awards: Courses may award up to 500 jewels
  • Completion Requirement: Must fully complete the course
  • Automatic Credit: Jewels are added to your balance immediately

Common questions about courses

What's the difference between a course and individual lessons?

Courses are structured learning paths with multiple lessons, assessments, and clear objectives. Individual lessons are standalone content pieces.

Can I skip ahead in a course?

It depends on the course settings. Some allow free navigation while others require sequential completion.

What happens if I miss the due date?

Depending on settings, you may still have access but might not earn a certificate. Check with your manager about extensions.

How do I know if a course has a pass score?

The pass score appears on the Score tab. If there's no Score tab, the course doesn't have assessments.

Why can't I fast forward through videos?

Some courses disable fast forwarding to ensure thorough learning. This is set by your organisation.

How long do I have access to completed courses?

Completed courses typically remain accessible for reference, but check with your organisation's policy.

Why does my course show as "In Progress" when I completed all the lessons?

You may need to complete assessments or case studies. Check the Course Content tab to see which items still need completion.

I completed everything but my progress is stuck at 90% - what's missing?

Check if there are hidden assessments, case studies, or if you need to meet the pass score requirement. The Course Content tab shows exactly what's incomplete.

My course progress reset or disappeared - what happened?

Course progress is tied to your enrolment. It goes back to 0 if an admin restarted your enrolment or reset your progress, or if the course has Auto-reset on failure switched on and you used all your attempts without reaching the pass score. If none of these apply, contact your admin or support.

Why can't I see my course completion percentage?

Course completion percentages appear on the Course Content tab. If you don't see it, the course might not track percentage-based progress or you may need to refresh the page.
