Give a learner another go at a course: Reset progress, Restart enrolment, and Auto-reset on failure

Reset a learner's progress, restart their enrolment with new dates, or reset failed attempts automatically.

When a learner fails a course or runs out of quiz attempts, you can give them a fresh attempt yourself. Do it from the course's Enrolments tab, or set the course to do it automatically.

Steps shown in this video

  1. To give a learner another go, open the course from Content and Courses, then Your Courses.
  2. Open the Enrolments tab.
  3. The Attempt no column shows which attempt each learner is on.
  4. Click the three-dot menu on the learner's row.
  5. View progress shows their lessons and any previous attempts.
  6. Choose Reset progress to start a new attempt and keep the same dates.
  7. Progress goes back to zero. The old attempt is saved to their history. The start date, due date and repeat rules don't change. Click Reset progress to confirm.
  8. We'll cancel here, so nothing changes in this demo.
  9. If they also need a new deadline, open the menu again.
  10. Choose Restart enrolment.
  11. The learner is already selected. Use Set a date to pick the new start date, due date and repeat options.
  12. Review and Launch removes the current enrolment and re-enrols them from zero. We'll stop before launching.
  13. You can also do this for several learners at once.
  14. Tick the learners you want.
  15. Then open Actions in the selection bar.
  16. Reset progress and Restart enrolment are both here. They're greyed out unless every selected learner is In Progress or Completed.
  17. To reset learners who fail automatically, use the course settings.
  18. Open the Settings tab.
  19. Turn on Enable Pass Score. Auto-reset needs a pass score to work.
  20. Then turn on Auto-reset on failure. When a learner reaches 100%, fails, and has no attempts left, their progress resets automatically.
  21. Click Update Settings to save. We won't save in this demo.

πŸ”„ Reset progress

  1. Go to Content & Courses > Your Courses and open the course.
  2. Open the Enrolments tab.
  3. On the learner's row, click the ... menu and choose Reset progress.
  4. Read the message and click Reset progress to confirm.

What happens:

  • The learner's progress goes back to 0 and they start a new course attempt.
  • Their previous attempt is saved to their history, so you keep a record of the old score and result.
  • Their quiz and assessment answers are cleared, so they get their full number of attempts again.
  • Their start date, due date, and recurrence don't change.

Reset progress only works for enrolments that are In Progress or Completed, and that includes learners who failed. It isn't available for people who were invited but haven't joined yet.

πŸ” Restart enrolment

Use this when the learner also needs a new deadline.

  1. On the Enrolments tab, click the ... menu on the learner's row.
  2. Choose Restart enrolment.
  3. The Enrol people to your course window opens with the learner already selected. Open Set a date to choose the new start date, due date, and repeat options.
  4. Click Review & Launch to re-enrol them.

Restart enrolment removes the current enrolment and creates a new one with the dates you chose. Progress starts again from zero. Like Reset progress, it only works for enrolments that are In Progress or Completed.

πŸ‘₯ Doing it for several people at once

  1. On the Enrolments tab, tick the learners you want.
  2. Open the actions menu in the selection bar.
  3. Choose Reset progress or Restart enrolment.

The option is greyed out unless every selected enrolment is In Progress or Completed. For Reset progress, the selection also can't include invites.

βš™οΈ Auto-reset on failure

  1. Open the course and go to the Settings tab.
  2. Turn on Enable Pass Score and set the pass score.
  3. Turn on Auto-reset on failure.

A learner's progress resets automatically when all three of these are true:

  • they reach 100% progress,
  • they fail the pass score, and
  • they have no quiz attempts left.

They can then start again. Their start date, due date, and repeat rules don't change.

Auto-reset needs a pass score. If you turn off Enable Pass Score, Auto-reset on failure turns off too.

πŸ“Š Seeing past attempts

  • The Enrolments tab has an Attempt no column that shows which attempt each learner is on.
  • Choose View progress from the row's ... menu to see Previous attempts. Each one shows:
    • the attempt number,
    • the score,
    • whether it was Passed, Failed, or Incomplete,
    • whether it ended with Auto-reset or Reset by admin, and the date.

❓ FAQ

Will the learner lose their certificate?Yes, for the attempt you reset. The certificate from that attempt is removed. They get a new one when they complete the new attempt.

Does resetting clear electronic signatures?Yes. If the course needs an electronic signature, the learner signs again on their new attempt. The old signature is kept with the attempt history.

Does resetting clear event attendance? No. Event attendance is recorded against the person, not the enrolment, so a reset doesn't clear it.

Can I just give someone more attempts without resetting? You can raise Allow re-attempts for quizzes and assessments in the course Settings tab. That applies to everyone enrolled on the course. To help one person, use Reset progress.

Will a restarted enrolment show up in Previous attempts? No. Previous attempts lists attempts closed by Reset progress or Auto-reset on failure. Restart enrolment creates a new enrolment instead.
